The future is headed to your neighborhood. Great Lakes Energy is excited to introduce Truestream, our new fiber network that will make your life better by providing convenient, reliable high-speed internet. Get the internet you want and deserve from a company that has served Michigan members with innovation and reliable service for decades.

Truestream will first be available in the Petoskey service district (rural Emmet County and small parts of Charlevoix and Cheboygan counties) before being expanded into other Great Lakes Energy service districts.

It's up to YOU to help us decide where the network should be built first! Register TODAY by following these simple steps:

1. Enter your address in the box to the right.
2. Select the products that interest you and submit your registration form.
3. If you are in the Petoskey service district and fiber internet service is available to you in 2018 or early 2019, you will receive a message giving you more information. If service is not available to you until late 2019 and beyond, you will receive a message about this.
4. If you are not in the Petoskey service district, you should still register. Your interest will help us decide where to bring service to next.
5. Encourage your friends and neighbors to register today - your registrations will help us determine where to build next!

The future is here: Truestream

12:15pm July 2, 2018

The future is headed to your neighborhood!

Together with the Great Lakes Energy board of directors and our employees, we are happy to share that we have begun construction on our Truestream fiber network.

Imagine internet speeds of up to 1,000 Megabits per second where it doesn’t matter how many devices you have connected or what you’re doing, you’ll never be slowed down. With our fiber technology, your connection will be reliable and able to handle whatever you throw at it…streaming, working from home, email, gaming, school, etc. Plus, there are no data caps and your internet speed isn’t affected by how many neighbors are also using it. Sound intriguing? Please register today so that when our crews are passing by your home, you don’t miss out on this life-changing connection. Registration on this site isn’t a contractual agreement – we’ll contact you when we’re ready to install service to you to confirm your interest.

Members in the Great Lakes Energy Petoskey service district (Emmet County and parts of Charlevoix and Cheboygan counties) will have service first, but we will use interest in other areas to determine where to build next.

It is important to note that construction is a big undertaking. You will see crews working for a few months before we begin installations so we ask for your patience as we work to construct a true broadband network to our members. Here’s a brief outline of the steps involved:

1.           Construction crews prep poles and lines for fiber.

2.           The main fiber line is built first.

3.           Next, connections from that main line to the outside of individual homes are made.

4.           Finally, we make installation appointments with those who have pre-registered and the connection is made inside the home. Please be patient as we work to get to this point.

Are you ready for the future? Enter your address in the box to the right to register your interest today.

Truestream…..The Future is Here!

High-speed fiber internet has arrived!

4:43pm June 18, 2018

Introducing Truestream, Great Lakes Energy's fiber network. We're building the unbeatable service you need from a name you can trust - your electric cooperative.

You asked for it and now Great Lakes Energy is bringing our members the life-changing internet service they need and want. With speeds up to 1 Gigabit per second (1,000 Mbps) available, we're connecting rural Michigan members to the world giving you the ability to stream, surf, download and all those other fancy things the city folk get to do!

Starting in July, Great Lakes Energy contractors will begin work constructing the fiber network that will bring life-changing fiber internet service to our members.

The build-out begins in our Petoskey service district which covers most of Emmet and parts of Charlevoix and Cheboygan counties. Select members in this district will be eligible for Truestream as early as this fall.  The service will first become available to a group of approximately 700 members with overhead service along the main fiber line that is set to be installed this summer.  Service to other areas will branch off from this main line and become available in 2019 and 2020 based on demand.

Installation of the service into homes and businesses will be done by GLE installation technicians who will provide the service you expect from your co-op. In fact, we may be hiring qualified fiber internet employees as this project takes off so please be sure to check the career center on our website for job postings.

Even if you’re not one of the first members who is able to receive service on the core line, you can still get ready to enjoy Truestream fiber by following these important tips:

Truestream Tip #1:

Sign up for a portable email address, such as Google, Yahoo or another no-cost service. With Truestream you won’t have a dedicated email address so if you use one through your current provider, it will go away when you make the switch. Start moving your contact list and subscriptions over to this new email address ahead of time.

Truestream Tip #2:

Don’t sign long-term agreements with your current provider if they would prevent you from being able to get Truestream when it comes to your area.

Truestream Tip #3:

Spread the word! We hope you’re as excited as we are about this amazing new service so tell your friends and neighbors!  With internet speeds ranging from 100 Mbps to 1 Gig and prices starting at around $59.99 per month, you’ll want to join Truestream today.

Truestream Tip #4

Register on this site today even if you’re not in Petoskey service district. We’ll be gauging your interest and may be making decisions on where to construct service next based on member demand! Plus, by signing up you’ll receive the latest updates and information on the project.

Hi Sherry, we are so excited to be offering this service to so many people who need it! Spread the word and get your friends, family and neighbors to register their interest as well - demand will help us determine where we build next!

Hi Tim! While I am no engineer, I have been reassured that we don't have to work from the top of the state down, connecting all areas along the way. This is why registering your interest and spreading the word to friends, family and neighbors is so important to us! We want to provide this service to people who we know want it. While some other factors may play a small part in determining where we build next, we know demand will be a major factor. Thank you for your interest!

Hello! I too am from the Wayland area where I have limited choices. I currently use FreedomNet. I have been fairly happy with them, but there are a lot of slow times and they do not have the equipment to get me a faster connection where I live. I have subscribed to Sling and we occasionally get the "streaming" message even when no one else is on the wi-fi. I like the 3 packages with options for speeds and I like that upload/download is symmetrical! Thank you!

We are so excited about the potential of fiber coming in to our area. Currently, we are very limited with what is available and the high cost of those services. One question I do have.....we are in the Wayland area which, by the map, is the furthest area south. What if we have enough support to go forward with the project but other connecting areas north of us do not, does that mean we won't be able to connect?

Hi Al, we couldn't have said it better ourselves! This project brings a life-changing service to people who are in desperate need for that connection, and we are so excited to be able bring that service! Thank you for your interest, and be sure to spread the word to your Lake Louise family, friends and neighbors - demand will help us determine where construction will be next!

I was so excited to see this that I actually ended up registering twice by accident. We are in great need of high speed internet at Lake Louise (Thumb Lake) in Boyne Falls. I previously high Century link DSL and was getting .28Mbps (yes, that is a decimal point in front of the 28). I switched to Hughes Net and we are currently paying more than your highest rate for 1000 Mbps and getting on average somewhere between 7Mbps and 15Mbps (and on rare occasions up to 25 Mbps) but are capped at 50 GB of data per month after which we are slowed down to crawl speed. While some may think that Lake Louise is only a summer community, there are a greater number of retirees like myself that live here full-time as well as owners that use their lake homes on a year round basis for 4 season activities. Most of them are used to high speed internet downstate and have more and more technology dependent on the the internet and wi-fi to monitor and control smart thermostats, cameras, security systems, etc. There are also more people working remotely when at the lake who would benefit from high speed internet. There are about 140 residences at the lake, three summer camps and a year round retreat center that would benefit from having high speed internet, since kids today (and adults) can't live without their smart phones. I signed up to be a champion and look forward to making this dream a reality. Keep up the good work, we are counting on you.

Tim, great question! Installation will follow the same path as the electrical, if it is overhead, it will be overhead. If it is underground, it will be underground. And yes, all included in the installation! Thank you for your interest!

I just thought of a question that others may also have. What if we have under ground electric service to our home? Will the the fiber also be trenched to our home if it comes to our area? Is this included in the installation?

Hi John, thank you for your question. Upload and download speeds are symmetrical with fiber internet, which is just one of the many advantages over other providers! Thank you for your interest, if you have any other questions, let us know.

Hi Ellen, thank you for your comments! We see a lot of parallels between bringing electricity to rural Michigan 80+ years ago (because the big guys wouldn't) and bringing high speed internet to rural Michigan now. It is a life changing event! Be sure to spread the word, and thank you for your interest!

Looking forward to actual wifi and not satillite. Frustrating when I see cable lines from Berger Rd/Mitchelle Rd heading east and down S. Ellsworth Rd, knowing they are not Truestream but another provider who has refused to come "up the hill" into Antler Hill Assoc because there are only 3 full time homes. Many of my coworkers who live rural Petoskey and are Great Lakes customers are all excited and ready to make the change. Because my unlimited data package is so bad, we are getting ready to cancel service. Why pay the amount we are paying and get nothing. Between that and horrible cellular service with Verizon....I am personally saying WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME and THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU from all of the unsatisfide Satillite internet customers.

Hi Jessica, interesting issue you have there...I will double check with the people responsible for the mapping. In the meantime, I see your service address with Great Lakes Energy does not have a N designation, so I would go without it for this as well.

Julie, my zone/area differs based on how I enter my address (i.e., whether or not I include "N" for north). The map pin is in exactly the same place, though, for both versions of my address. How can I find out my correct zone?

Holy cat biscuits Shawn, we are excited too! When we say this is truly life changing, we mean it, and we are honored to be part of it! In my semi-limited tech knowledge, I know the standard installations will include one piece of hardware, a router that will also include managed WiFi. Once we get closer to installations, we will have a more detailed update on the equipment itself. In the mean time, spread the word, and thank you for your interest and excitement!

Hi Jessica, as it currently stands, the areas are loosely based on our electrical substation that serves that area, not the township itself. I will find out if it is feasible to include townships lines or not at this point. Thanks for your interest!

Holy cat biscuits! I can't express how exciting this is. I currently have fiber installed to my residence in Petoskey, which is CRAZY expensive. Who could imagine the connection at my farm in Brutus would be better and cheaper! Will there be updates about the specifics of the technology? (I'm curious about potential static IP addresses, which ports will be accessible from the outside, etc) I'd like to be able to work from an office at my farm instead of my current office, but need some specifics in order to make that work...

Are pamphlets or photos available showing details of a completed residential installation? Google searches have information about the equipment needed to bring fiber optic service into homes, but it would be nice to know what equipment Truestream plans to provide when meeting a service request. Information to help prepare for the service may help homeowners make it easier for the installers and keep installation cost to a minimum. If some equipment will need to be provided by the homeowner, making wise decisions in the interim will save time and money.

Hi Ralph, the Petoskey A1 and A2 areas are not shown on the map, but they are the parts of each area listed that will be constructed first and can get service as soon as this year. Then we will branch from there. When you register your address, if you are in A1 or A2, you will receive a message telling you. Remember, that construction may be driven by demand so spread the word!
