Huge Milestone Achieved This Week: Our First Internet Installation
Truestream made history yesterday. We just installed our very first internet subscriber and the family of five couldn't be happier. (Rumor is they may be catching up on family movie nights starting this weekend.) This first subscriber is an employee who happens to be part of our main fiber line installation - we couldn't ask for a better tester and Truestream "friendly"!
The best news is that we passed the test! That means we are moving on to more installations in the coming weeks. We’ve already built connections to the outside of several homes that pre-registered on jointruestream.com and the next step for each of those will be installation. The completion of this first installation signals a giant milestone in this multi-year construction project. So the long and the short of it is this week, we made history in our effort to build a fiber network that will change the lives of our members for the better!

seeing some serious progress!
As of last week, we've hung more than 91 miles of fiber and 222 ports, which will be used to connect the main fiber line to individual homes. We are so proud of the hard work our crews and teams have put in the past few months to bring our fiber project from inception to reality! We are 61% complete with the core fiber construction in our Petoskey service area - in fact, we plan on lighting up part of that network this week! That keeps us on track to begin installations to the first homes in November.
For the first phase of the project, Great Lakes Energy members within 1,500 feet of the core route are eligible for service first. Those who have signed up and are within this area will be contacted to complete their order soon!
While this core route area is the first zone, we plan to bring Truestream throughout our territory, starting with the Petoskey service district. Where we go next is influenced by the number of registrations. So, even if you are not in one of the first areas, keep spreading the word. The registrations truly mean something to us!

‘diggin’ this fiber
Truestream contract crews have started off with a brisk construction pace this summer. They have built more than 50 miles of fiber already. The fast pace will continue until Jack Frost has his way and the ground is too frozen to continue. Fiber is being dug underground and strung overhead.
The first connections are still on schedule to be live before the end of the year. The next group of homes to get service after the winter actually may get service sooner! Members who may be eligible for service early were contacted by email recently for underground easement permissions. If you are in the A2 group and haven’t responded, please do so by Sept. 15 as that will quicken the timeframe for when your service can be installed.
The order for construction and connections follows:
1. Crews are currently building the fiber backbone which connects all of our substations in the Petoskey service district. Members within 1,500 feet of the backbone are eligible for service first. These members are designated as A1 or A2 when they register on jointruestream.com. A1 members have overhead service and A2 have underground. A1 members will be connected first because their fiber will be finished first.
2. In the spring of 2019, we will begin construction in other areas in the Petoskey service district. See the Areas tab on jointruestream.com for the list of areas eligible and the progress for each. Demand for the service will help us determine which area we construct service to next after the A1 and A2 areas are completed.
3. Demand in areas outside of the Petoskey service district will help guide future construction plans, which could start as early as 2020.
We’re ‘diggin’ how fast this fiber is going in and hope you are too!

A ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the start of our Truestream fiber internet service, powered by Great Lakes Energy, was held Tuesday at Great Lakes Energy headquarters in Boyne City. Joining the electric cooperative’s board of directors, managers and employees were state Reps. Lee Chatfield and Triston Cole. The two legislators commended Great Lakes Energy for being the first to bring a high-speed fiber network to unserved rural areas of Emmet and Charlevoix counties. Also on hand were local officials including the Boyne City Commissioners and City Manager Mike Cain, Northern Lakes Economic Alliance President Andy Hayes, Petoskey Chamber of Commerce President Carlin Smith, USDA Representative Jason Allen, North Central Michigan College President David Finley and Char-Em ISD Career and Technical Education Director Jim Rummer.
If you could not join us in person, visit our Facebook page to view the celebration!
Plans start at speeds of 100 megabits per
second and go up to 1 Gig or 1,000 megabits per second. The first homes are
expected to be connected later this year in parts of Emmet and Charlevoix
counties. Expansion of the fiber
network will continue for several years, with the intention of reaching all
parts of Great Lakes Energy’s 26-county service territory, as long as there is

The future is headed to your neighborhood!
Together with the Great Lakes Energy board of directors and our employees, we are happy to share that we have begun construction on our Truestream fiber network.
Imagine internet speeds of up to 1,000 Megabits per second where it doesn’t matter how many devices you have connected or what you’re doing, you’ll never be slowed down. With our fiber technology, your connection will be reliable and able to handle whatever you throw at it…streaming, working from home, email, gaming, school, etc. Plus, there are no data caps and your internet speed isn’t affected by how many neighbors are also using it. Sound intriguing? Please register today so that when our crews are passing by your home, you don’t miss out on this life-changing connection. Registration on this site isn’t a contractual agreement – we’ll contact you when we’re ready to install service to you to confirm your interest.
Members in the Great Lakes Energy Petoskey service district (Emmet County and parts of Charlevoix and Cheboygan counties) will have service first, but we will use interest in other areas to determine where to build next.
It is important to note that construction is a big undertaking. You will see crews working for a few months before we begin installations so we ask for your patience as we work to construct a true broadband network to our members. Here’s a brief outline of the steps involved:
1. Construction crews prep poles and lines for fiber.
2. The main fiber line is built first.
3. Next, connections from that main line to the outside of individual homes are made.
4. Finally, we make installation appointments with those who have pre-registered and the connection is made inside the home. Please be patient as we work to get to this point.

Introducing Truestream, Great Lakes Energy's fiber network. We're building the unbeatable service you need from a name you can trust - your electric cooperative.
You asked for it and now Great Lakes Energy is bringing our members the life-changing internet service they need and want. With speeds up to 1 Gigabit per second (1,000 Mbps) available, we're connecting rural Michigan members to the world giving you the ability to stream, surf, download and all those other fancy things the city folk get to do!
Starting in July, Great Lakes Energy contractors will
begin work constructing the fiber network that will bring life-changing fiber
internet service to our members.
The build-out begins in our Petoskey service district which covers most of Emmet and parts of Charlevoix and Cheboygan counties. Select members in this district will be eligible for Truestream as early as this fall. The service will first become available to a group of approximately 700 members with overhead service along the main fiber line that is set to be installed this summer. Service to other areas will branch off from this main line and become available in 2019 and 2020 based on demand.
Installation of the service into homes and businesses will be done by GLE installation technicians who will provide the service you expect from your co-op. In fact, we may be hiring qualified fiber internet employees as this project takes off so please be sure to check the career center on our website for job postings.
Even if you’re not one of the first members who is able to receive service on the core line, you can still get ready to enjoy Truestream fiber by following these important tips:
Truestream Tip #1:
Sign up for a portable email address, such as Google, Yahoo or another no-cost service. With Truestream you won’t have a dedicated email address so if you use one through your current provider, it will go away when you make the switch. Start moving your contact list and subscriptions over to this new email address ahead of time.
Truestream Tip #2:
Don’t sign long-term agreements with your current provider if they would prevent you from being able to get Truestream when it comes to your area.
Truestream Tip #3:
Spread the word! We hope you’re as excited as we are about this amazing new service so tell your friends and neighbors! With internet speeds ranging from 100 Mbps to 1 Gig and prices starting at around $59.99 per month, you’ll want to join Truestream today.
Truestream Tip #4
Register on this site today even if you’re not in Petoskey service district. We’ll be gauging your interest and may be making decisions on where to construct service next based on member demand! Plus, by signing up you’ll receive the latest updates and information on the project.
